MIFFLINTOWN — Oh, the signs of spring are all around the Juniata Valley with the birds chirping, flowers blooming and avid readers of all ages shopping at the Friends of the Juniata County Library Book Sale.
Wait, what? It’s true, the Friends’ book sale has certainly become a spring tradition.
Thanks to hefty donations of books, movies and audiobooks, the Friends will hold a long-awaited spring sale from Tuesday, April 22 through Thursday, April 24 in the Friends’ Book Cellar at the Juniata County Library, located at 498 Jefferson St., Mifflintown.
“The Friends promise this bag sale has something for everyone,” said Friends of the Juniata County Library Publicity Chairperson Virginia Haubert.
To illustrate, several of the Friends’ loyal volunteers with diverse tastes in reading material explored the shelves for something that appealed just to them.
Each volunteer is pictured with the books they found: Nancy Chrismer chose gardening; Kathy Bowman browsed the biography section; Patti Hines loved all of the crafting books; Cindy Lucas made a beeline for birding; Nancy Ramgatie nabbed a famous best seller; and Marilyn Macoy got lost in the mystery section of the audio books.
“The Friends point out these examples only scratch the surface of the materials available. In addition to adult fiction and non-fiction, the young adult and children’s shelves are bursting with books,” Haubert added. “The DVDs, CDs and magazines are also included in the bag sale price.”
For $7, a patron can cram a bag full of these items. Additionally, there are also jigsaw puzzles for $3 each.
For those who like to nibble on something sweet while they shop or read, the Friends have a special surprise on the menu. From 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on April 22 and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on April 24, Mercy Westover of Mercyful Sweets Bakery will sell baked goods in the Virginia Swartz Community Room.
A percentage of the sales will be donated to the Friends, so shoppers can satisfy that sweet tooth and support the Friends, too.
“As always, the Friends depend on the community for their support, but at this time with the recent funding cuts, it is even more important to support the library,” Haubert said. “Please help the Friends keep the Juniata County Library alive.”
