The Harry Potter franchise about the “Boy Who Lived” now lives in a different format than fans are used to.
Max has confirmed that the TV series is in the works and, similar to the movies, will be an adaptation of the books.
According to HarryPotter.com, HBO CEO Casey Bloys described the plans for the series as follows: “Harry Potter is a cultural phenomenon and it is clear there is such an enduring love and thirst for the Wizarding World.
“In partnership with Warner Bros. Television and J.K. Rowling, this new Max Original series will dive deep into each of the iconic books that fans have continued to enjoy for all of these years,” he added.
This is a reassuring sentiment to the devoted fan base of Harry Potter.
Fans are scratching for every detail released, and if you are one of those fans itching for even more, keep reading to find out everything we know so far.
What we know about the cast of the HBO Harry Potter TV series:
Even though the show was announced in 2023, there have been limited announcements for the cast of the TV adaptation.
Most recently, Deadline reported that while not entirely confirmed, British comedian-actor Nick Frost is closing a deal to play Rubeus Hagrid. If it is finalized, Frost will join John Lithgow (who will play Albus Dumbledore) as the only confirmed actor. Other possible stars include Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall and Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape, but neither have been confirmed.
However, it does seem to be coming to fruition for Frost. People reported that he posted to his Instagram, “What a bloody lovely day! It’s happening, it’s actually happening. Stay cool.”
He also followed Lithgow and Essiedu.
What we know about the release date of the HBO Harry Potter TV show:
As of now, there is no confirmed release date. According to Deadline, HBO confirmed that the show is planning to begin filming this summer, and Bloys is expecting a late 2026 or early 2027 release.
What we know about the format of the HBO Harry Potter TV show:
The books now have the opportunity to be retold as a TV series, which offers many benefits for fans who are upset about missing details in the movies.
According to 9 Meters, the series will have seven seasons, each based on a book, allowing for more expansion on the lore within each. No matter the format, it looks to portray a very book-accurate adaptation.
Author J.K. Rowling told HarryPotter.com, “Max’s commitment to preserving the integrity of my books is important to me, and I’m looking forward to being part of this new adaptation which will allow for a degree of depth and detail only afforded by a long-form television series.”
A book-accurate series seems to be exactly what fans are hoping for.
While there is some time till the show’s release, fans can rewatch all eight previous films now on Max.
