Movie Review: 'Snow White' is no poisoned apple but it doesn't whistle
Good intentions, like swirling bluebirds, flutter through the new live-action “Snow White.” But all those well-meaning efforts add up to a mishmash of a fable, caught in between now and once upon a time, writes Associated Press Film Writer Jake Coyle in his review. Despite some gloriously lush production design, “Snow White” can’t quite find its own rhythm. Even the new songs that are good struggle to fit in alongside old standbys. Rachel Zegler does a spirited job remaking a classic Disney princess into a more modern woman. When she sings, the movie gets a lift. But the strain of renovation shows, particularly in its awkward CGI handling of Dopey, Sneezy and company.
Movie Review: Jonathan Majors plays a man on the edge in the dark drama ‘Magazine Dreams’
Jonathan Majors plays an amateur bodybuilder in the dark drama “Magazine Dreams.” The film is the first major release since Majors was convicted of assaulting his former girlfriend. Written and directed by Elijah Bynum, “Magazine Dreams” was filmed before Majors' conviction and is an unsettling portrait of ambition, violence and unresolved trauma, writes Lindsey Bahr in her review for The Associated Press. Bahr adds that, “it’s impossible to deny the monumental ferocity of Majors’ performance, from his full transformation to his unsettling ability to show the pain behind (most of) the psychotic actions.” “Magazine Dreams” opens in theaters Friday. It's rated R.
Maná talks historic new tour, unseating Bruce Springsteen and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame
NEW YORK (AP) — Mexican pop-rock giants Maná will embark on a huge North American tour this fall. It includes a four-night residency at Los Angeles' Kia Forum. They will break Bruce Springsteen's record for most arena shows in LA, with 44 to his 42. The band describes their concerts as “a celebration of the Latin community." They've got a lot to celebrate. Last month Maná was among the 14 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame nominees for 2025. They became the first fully Spanish-language act to receive a nod. They dedicated the honor to immigrants.
CBS' '60 Minutes' is unflinching in its White House coverage in the shadow of Trump's $20B lawsuit
NEW YORK (AP) — As CBS' parent company considers settlement of President Donald Trump's lawsuit against “60 Minutes,” America’s storied newsmagazine is pulling no punches in its coverage of the new administration. In each of its broadcasts since the inauguration, it has featured a hard-hitting piece about Trump's action, most of them reported by correspondent Scott Pelley. All come as television’s most popular and influential news broadcast is being watched to see how it will respond to a unique pressure. The show's leaders won't talk about whether any message is being sent, but longtime industry observers say the message the CBS journalists are sending is that they will not be intimidated.
A former studio engineer is charged with stealing unreleased Eminem music and selling it online
Federal prosecutors in Michigan have charged a former Eminem studio engineer with stealing the rap star's unreleased music and selling it online. Acting U.S. Attorney Julie Beck in Detroit announced Wednesday that Joseph Strange is charged with copyright infringement and interstate transportation of stolen goods. Strange's attorney says the charges are untested allegations and the matter will be handled in court. According to an FBI affidavit, Strange lost his job at Eminem's suburban Detroit studio in 2021. Other studio employees reported to the FBI in January that unreleased music was appearing online. People who had purchased the music led investigators to Strange.
Book Review: Hannah Deitch delivers twisty thrills with debut novel, ‘Killer Potential'
“A Thelma & Louise for our times,” is how bestselling thriller writer Paula Hawkins describes the debut novel, “Killer Potential,” from Hannah Deitch. AP reviewer Rob Merrill agrees, writing that it “opens at a breakneck clip and doesn’t really slow down.” The plot centers around Evie Gordon, an SAT tutor who finds the bodies of one of her student’s parents murdered in their home. Falsely accused as the killer, she goes on the run with another woman she rescues from the home, and they’re forced to commit crimes to survive as they wait for a chance to prove their innocence. “Killer Potential” goes on sale March 18.
Movie Review: Even 2 De Niros aren’t quite enough to make ‘Alto Knights’ a successor to ‘Goodfellas’
Robert De Niro's doing double duty in “The Alto Knights,” literally. He plays both lead roles in this true life-based tale of feuding mobsters Frank Costello and Vito Genovese. In development for decades, director Barry Levinson’s movie is written by “Goodfellas” scribe Nicholas Pileggi and tracks how two childhood friends went in different directions on the mean streets of New York City. In her review, Associated Press critic Jocelyn Noveck writes that despite a number of entertaining and witty moments, the film falls short of the mob movie magic of earlier films like “Goodfellas.” In theaters Friday.

'Happy Face' looks at ripple effects of true crime
NEW YORK (AP) — The new Paramount+ series “Happy Face” has all the elements of a gripping true-crime yarn: A serial killer, his estranged daughter, a race to get an innocent man off death row. But perhaps the most intriguing part? How it examines the warping nature of true crime itself. “Happy Face,” which begins airing Thursday, is inspired by the true story of Melissa Moore, who discovered her father was a prolific serial killer. Starring Annaleigh Ashford and Dennis Quaid, “Happy Face” is told from a female point of view and looks at how a shameful secret can echo through generations. It starts airing Thursday.
