The North Yorkshire Moors Railway (NYMR) is set to take families on a prehistoric adventure this Easter.

The heritage railway will host a range of dinosaur-themed activities alongside its regular railway experiences from April 5 to 21.

This includes a special appearance by the locomotive No 45596 Bahamas, which will be running on the NYMR tracks for the first time.

The Easter activities are part of the Railway 200 celebrations, marking 200 years since the birth of the modern railway in the UK.

Visitors can enjoy the historic locomotives while engaging in the Jurassic-themed Easter adventure.

The dinosaur-themed events include meeting baby dinosaurs, a dino dig, and a chance to make a dino footprint.Jubilee class No 45596  (Image: NYMR)

The 'Meet the Baby Dinosaurs' event will take place from April 18 to April 21 at Goathland Station, costing £10 per child.

The 'Dino Dig' will be held from April 5 to April 17 at Pickering Station, and from April 18 to April 21 at Goathland Station.

Children can also make their own dinosaur footprint keepsake from April 18 to April 21 at Goathland Station.

Giant dinosaur eggs will be placed at select stations for photo opportunities, and visitors can search for hidden dino eggs at each stop.

A downloadable activity sheet, packed with fun facts, puzzles, and challenges, will also be available to test visitors' dino knowledge.

Charlotte Hawes, events and guest experience manager at NYMR, said: "This Easter, we’re thrilled to bring families an experience that combines the magic of heritage rail travel with the excitement of the prehistoric era.

"From meeting baby dinosaurs to digging for fossils, there’s so much for visitors of all ages to enjoy.

"With this event taking place during Railway 200, it makes it the perfect opportunity to celebrate the incredible history of rail travel while making unforgettable memories."

In addition to the dinosaur-themed activities, NYMR has more in store for families looking for unique experiences.

This includes a stargazing event on April 4 at The Outstation, Stape, costing £10 per person, and a big science show on April 5 and April 6 at Pickering Station Classroom, costing £8 per person.

The locomotive No 45596 Bahamas will be running on the standard services from April 5 to April 13, excluding April 9.

The NYMR has also launched a new experience this spring, the 200 Trail, as part of the national Railway 200 celebrations.

The trail encourages families, rail enthusiasts, and adventurers to explore the first 40 fun activities of this year-long challenge while travelling along the heritage railway.

Visitors can also take on the 200-mile challenge, tracking their journeys between historic stations and immersing themselves in the rich railway heritage.

The North Yorkshire Moors Railway is an award-winning charitable trust that carries 300,000 individual passengers every year.

The NYMR cares for operating and developing the railway it owns from Pickering to Grosmont.

The heritage railway operates over Network Rail from Grosmont to Whitby. For more information and to book tickets, visit www.nymr.co.uk/easter-fun.
