In a world where international migration continues to shape lives and societies, Remitly’s newly released Immigration Index for 2025 offers key insights into the most desirable destinations for migrants. According to the report, Iceland has emerged as the top-ranked country for those seeking a better quality of life, safety, and improved career opportunities.
The index, compiled by the American digital remittance platform Remitly, evaluated 82 countries on 24 essential parameters that influence immigrant life. These factors include healthcare, employment opportunities, cost of living, connectivity, public transport, safety, happiness, banking access, and the strength of migrant communities. Each country was given a cumulative score out of 100.
With a score of 58.4, Iceland secured the number one position on the list. Aside from its picturesque landscapes and high happiness index, Iceland scored exceptionally well in areas such as safety, digital connectivity, access to banking, and environmental sustainability. The country’s commitment to climate action and its use of renewable energy sources—geothermal and hydropower—also contributed to its high ranking, making it an appealing choice for eco-conscious migrants.
“Iceland has way more to offer than its enchanting natural beauty,” the report highlighted. “It ranks among the top countries globally in terms of minimum wage rates and annual salaries, making it an ideal destination for relocation.”
Switzerland and Luxembourg followed in the second and third positions, with scores of 55.8 and 55.7, respectively. Other countries in the top 10 include Norway (53.7), United Arab Emirates (52.5), Ireland (52.4), United States (52.2), Denmark (52), Netherlands (52), and Australia (51.7). The United Kingdom stood at 19th with a score of 46.5.
The report is especially significant in the current global context, where several countries are tightening immigration policies. It provides a data-driven overview for individuals considering a move abroad in search of better opportunities and living conditions.
Among South Asian nations, India ranked 75th with a score of 30.5. China was positioned at 41st (36.1), Bangladesh at 68th (31.5), and Pakistan at 72nd (30.9).
With international migration currently accounting for approximately 281 million people—or 3.6% of the global population—Remitly’s Immigration Index offers timely and valuable guidance for aspiring migrants worldwide.
