Beast Girl officially makes her first appearance in DC's new Doom Patrol series.

Written by Dennis Culver and drawn by Chris Burnham, a preview of Unstoppable Doom Patrol #1 introduces readers to Beast Girl, a new hero whose power set appears to differ from Beast Boy. Also known as Changeling, Beast Boy was created by writer Arnold Drake and artist Bob Brown in 1965's Doom Patrol #99, and possesses the ability to shape-shift into various animals. While talking to Elasti-Woman in the preview, Beast Girl says, "I could use my powers to trigger their fight-or-flight instincts," indicating that her abilities are more mental as opposed to physical.

The Doom Patrol Gets New Leaders and Heroes

Beast Girl does have an animal-like appearance, however, sporting purple fur, horns, a bushy tail and elongated ears. During an exclusive interview with CBR, Burnham said of the newcomer, "I love drawing Beast Girl. I love drawing cute little characters, so she's one of my favorites to draw." Beast Girl is one of several new heroes joining the Doom Patrol for this miniseries, others including Psilcybin, the Worm and Degenerate, who Burnham has labeled the most difficult to draw due to his spiky design.

At least for the miniseries' first issue, the preview highlights that the Doom Patrol's main roster comprises Beast Girl, Robotman, Negative Man, Elasti-Woman and The Chief, one of Crazy Jane's alternate identities. Unstoppable Doom Patrol spins out of Lazarus Planet: Dark Fate #1's "Storm Damaged" story by Culver and Burnham, which revealed that The Chief now leads the Doom Patrol instead of Niles Caulder. In the new series, the team has adopted the mission of "Saving the world by saving the monsters," rescuing those in need and giving them a home within the Doom Patrol's new headquarters, the Shelter.

DC's New Miniseries and How to Extend Them

Unstoppable Doom Patrol was set to last only six issues, and although it has already received an additional bonus issue, Culver told CBR that planned future arcs and getting the series extended depends on pre-orders. It seems this is the case with other slated Dawn of DC miniseries as well, such as the upcoming Green Arrow series written by Joshua Williamson and drawn by Sean Izaakse. The Green Arrow artist told fans online, "Sure it's a six issue series. BUT pre-orders can change that." Other Dawn of DC miniseries announced as of writing include Cyborg, Spirit World, The Vigil, City Boy and Steelworks.

Along with Culver and Burnham, Unstoppable Doom Patrol #1 is colored by Brian Reber and lettered by Pat Brosseau. Main cover art for the issue is by Burnham and Nick Filardi, with variant cover artwork contributed to by Nathan Szerdy, Culver, Reber and Burnham. The issue goes on sale March 28 from DC Comics.
