The following contains spoilers for Jeepers Creepers: Reborn, now playing in theaters.

One of the current Hollywood fads is soft reboots, with horror properties, in particular, lapping it up. Jeepers Creepers: Reborn is getting in on the action, bringing back the Creeper in rural Florida for another 23-day feeding frenzy. And while after three films, it did feel like the series ran its course, this movie offers a chance to refine things after the well-received original. It's following the likes of Halloween, which is close to releasing Halloween Ends, the finale to Michael Myers and Laurie Strode's rivalry. Interestingly, Jeepers Creepers: Reborn has another thread in common with Halloween, pulling a mistake straight from Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers.

How Halloween 6 Failed Its Cult Story

Michael Myers in Halloween 6

The shared arc revolves around the idea of cults, which Halloween 6 really botched. The 1995 film focused on a secret society in Haddonfield that was actually studying the effects of evil on Michael. This cult was led by Dr. Wynn, who ran experiments and made clones at Smith's Grove Sanitarium, where Michael was held. He even pumped the evil essence into Danny Strode and Jamie Lloyd's son, Steven, wanting to see the power of Thorn manifest in them. Wynn's cult was fascinated by how it got people like Michael to kill their bloodline, which led to a lab filled with fetuses and an attempt to recreate Michael -- something Tommy and Dr. Loomis fought against when they found out how depraved Wynn was.

The problem with this was that it took away from the mystique of Michael. Fans didn't care if he was supernatural -- they just loved the idea he was an immortal, unstoppable killing machine. Plus, the cult manipulating everyone's lives felt too convoluted, forcing logic into the entire franchise. Simplicity worked in this series, so trying to tie science in made it a mess. That's why the property was glad to remove all this fluff and continue from the original in 2018's Halloween.

Jeepers Creepers: Reborn Copied Halloween 6's Mistake

Jeepers Creepers: Reborn had a cult like Halloween 6

Come Jeepers Creepers: Reborn, a similar error in narrative came to light when Chase and Laine ended up in the Creeper's domain. They thought they were attending a Halloween cosplay festival, but everything was set up by a cult. They sensed Laine was pregnant, so they schemed to get them trapped in a mansion for the Creeper to feed on her fetus and attain immortality. But it was even more nonsensical than the Halloween cult because at least they were tied back to the villain and victims.

In Reborn, it's never explained how the cult prepped for Laine, how its psychic latched onto her, how Laine developed her own psychic connection to the Creeper and how the cult came to worship the Creeper. There's no rhyme or reason to their madness -- they just show up, trap the heroes and leave, coming off as inorganic and unnecessary as the Creeper already marked Laine for himself. Ultimately, this cult lacked purpose and wasn't properly tethered to the Creeper's history, which helped make an already terrible film even worse.
