And Salford's MediaCity was given the coveted purple spot traditionally reserved for London's glitzy Mayfair.

Three of the city's charities also had their space on the board.

Each of these 'community chest squares' was voted for by the members of the public.

"It was great to know that were one of the top three recognised in Salford," said Emma Rapley, warehouse coordinator at Salford Foodbank.

"It is rather surreal... We're cemented in history and forever more."

Merwyn Gledhill, distribution centres coordinator at the foodbank, added: "People play Monopoly for years and years and it's passed down from father to daughter.

"There's just three charities in Salford on the board and it's great to be recognised for the work we do."

Afolabi Omotola is part of the team that put the board together.

He explained to the MEN that at the beginning of every year his team look at around 10 to 15 cities across the world.

He's about the head off to Brooklyn and Palm Springs - but today was Salford's time to shine.

"It's always been a thought that we should go to Salford," he said.

He said that one of his colleagues knows the area well - and was 'fascinated by the pride' people have for the city.

"It was justified by the feedback we got.

"We had thousands of suggestions. The range of things, from parks to sports, made it a fantastic project," Afolabi said.

"The game squares span our long and proud history, from Ordsall Hall built 750 years ago to the ultra-modern and still expanding MediaCity.

“The board also shows the real heart of Salford - our people - through local charities, Salford Lads Club and two of our great sports teams also being featured."
