Stefanos Tsitsipas stuns Novak Djokovic to book quarter-final spot at Rogers Cup

Teenager Stefanos Tsitsipas stunned reigning Wimbledon champion Novak Djokovic to produce the biggest upset of the Rogers Cup so far.

The 19-year-old Greek player prevailed 6-3 6-7 (5/7) 6-3 over the former world number one in a little over two-and-a-quarter hours to book his spot in the quarter-finals in Montreal.

A single break of serve was enough for Tsitsipas to clinch the first set, before Djokovic took advantage of some tight errors at the end of the second to force a decider.

Holding his nerve, Tsitsipas hit a stunning backhand down the line to break serve in the second game of the third set – and never looked back.

He capitalised on his first match point with a cross-court forehand winner, sealing the biggest win of his career.

Tsitsipas now faces defending champion Alexander Zverev in the final eight, after the German routed Daniil Medvedev in straight sets.

The world number three won 96 per cent of points on his first serve to claim a 6-3 6-2 win in just 53 minutes.

Meanwhile, Rafael Nadal battled past an improving Stan Wawrinka, withstanding some of the Swiss player’s best tennis in months.

The world number one faced some impressive one-handed backhands from his opponent, but in typical Nadal fashion found the angles he needed and tracked down every ball.

Rain interrupted the first set at 6-5, but the Spaniard immediately broke when play resumed to take the set.

The pair exchanged breaks in the second before Nadal edged ahead in the tiebreak to win 7-5 7-6 (7/4).

Marin Cilic awaits in the quarter-finals, following his speedy defeat of Argentina’s Diego Schwartzman.

The sixth seed dropped just five points on his first serve to progress 6-3 6-2.

Kevin Anderson beat Ilya Ivashka 7-5 6-3, but his Wimbledon semi-final opponent John Isner did not fare as well, losing 7-6 (7/5) 7-6 (7/0) to Karen Khachanov.

Grigor Dimitrov will face Anderson next, having come through a third-set tiebreak for the second match in a row.

The Bulgarian found himself a break down in the decider against Frances Tiafoe, but found some of his best serving to escape trouble and win 7-6 (7/1) 3-6 7-6 (7/4).

Elsewhere, veteran Dutchman Robin Haase advanced to the quarter-finals for the second consecutive year, beating Denis Shapovalov 7-5 6-2.
