Mother Teresa, Nun who Scared Albania’s Communists

The relationship between the woman about to be proclaimed a saint by the Vatican and the Communists who ruled Albania was difficult - but had odd twists.

Albania is taking great pride in the fact that on September 4 the Catholic Church will proclaim the missionary nun Mother Teresa a saint. However, her country of origin was not always so enthusiastic about her achievements.

Documents obtained by BIRN reveal that Albania’s Communist regime spied on the Indian-based nun, considered her dangerous and thought the Vatican promoted her to damage Albania.

Revealed Albanian National Archive documents show the hostility of officials toward her over the years.

Born in Skopje, Macedonia, to ethnic Albanian parents from Kosovo, the nun started to come into the radar of the Communist regime in Albania in the early 1980s.
