Pakistani Author Umera Ahmed Spots Her 2004 Novel, ‘Pir-e-Kamil’ In Heeramandi

The upcoming series Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar boasts a star-studded cast including Manisha Koirala, Sonakshi Sinha, Taha Shah Badussha, Fardeen Khan, and Richa Chadha. Set in Lahore’s pre-independence era, the show aims to transport viewers back in time. However, eagle-eyed viewers spotted a historical continuity error. A scene featuring Aditi Rao Hydari includes a copy of the Urdu novel “Pir-e-Kamil,” which wasn’t published until 2004.

On her Instagram account, Pakistani author Umera Ahmed pointed out a historical inaccuracy in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s series “Heeramandi.” Sharing an image from the show, she jokingly questioned the show’s portrayal of the time period. She wrote, “So #PireKamil was written before partition, or is Time Travel real? Interesting (sic).”

A writer expressed, “For those asking the context, this is a scene from Netflix series Heeramandi jismai partition say pehlay k Lahore mai mojood aik bookstore ka scene dikhaya gaya hai and look in the left book kaunsi mojood hai us bookstore mai (sic).”

Discussing his latest project, the filmmaker spoke about the appreciation he gets from the neighboring nation. In an interview with IndieWire, he said, “There was so much love that I received from Pakistan, people waiting for it (Heeramandi) anxiously, waiting for this to be told. It’s a piece that somehow brings us all together when all India was one, it was undivided. These people belong to us as much as they belong to them. I think they belong to both of us and both countries are showing a lot of love for finally the show being made (sic).”
Bhansali dismissed attempts to sow discord between the two nations is not relevant. He added, “I still feel we’re all one, I still feel that we’re all connected in so many ways. There’s a lot of love for people on both sides, leave aside a few people would want to create issues — but those are not relevant (sic).”

Sanjay Leela Bhansali recently surprised fans by revealing his initial casting vision for Heeramandi. It is worth noting that Bhansali considered Pakistani actors Mahira Khan and Fawad Khan for the series.
